Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
