A American diplomat spoke of "notable headway" after bilateral negotiations in Geneva. On Monday night, Russian leadership made its response: a renewed assault of rocket attacks on Kyiv.

It is convenient to criticize certain parties of consistently pushing Russian terms. But that does not seem to be the whole story. American leadership works based on a principle understood by seasoned negotiators: you cannot secure via talks what you have lost on the battlefield. The American government believes that it is unfeasible to compel Moscow to relinquish the land that it already controls in Ukraine's occupied territories.
The issue is that while acknowledging this situation, US leadership does nothing to prevent Kremlin actions, through words or deeds, from thinking that the status quo will not evolve additionally in its benefit in the coming year.
Opposing Positions
